Today, Rebecca de los Reyes Arcega passed away after a five-year battle with breast cancer. The entire family was there, including her niece and sister who flew all the way from New Zealand, and although she had been awake when she started losing breath, the doctor assured us that she felt no pain because of the high morphine dose she was given.

She was a kind, talented, and caring woman — full of life and eager to live it, and so very loving. Please pray that her next great adventure will be filled with grander and more pleasant things, as it’s nothing less than she deserves. She’s touched and affected so many people’s lives, and asked for nothing but friendship in return.

I’ll be posting pictures of her soon.

I'm sure some of you remember this show XD I was at a very impressionable age when this was showing locally on RPN 9, I think it was. My father missed it so much, that he ordered the DVD from Amazon and ripped it into AVIs to share. The quality of the video from the actual DVD we received wasn't stellar to begin with (they seem to have been archived from uh...very analog sources. XD ), and that, of course, carried over to the rips. But it's as good as we could make it. Still very watchable, just don't expect HQ.

I was afraid Covington Cross would be one of those series that I remember very fondly, but regret ever watching after seeing it again. Fortunately, this wasn't the case. It's still as fun and clever as I remember it to be. It has perhaps two or three episodes that I don't really want to see again, but the rest are still pretty much up there, even by today's standards. The only real parts that make me itch to press the fast forward button are the dreadful fight scenes :X; But if you can stomach the fight scenes in today's [Robin Hood] and [Merlin], then it shouldn't be a problem!

a few more pictures to pimp/tickle your memory )

guess whoooo XD DCI Gene Hunt as a strapping young lad )

On to the specs:
~ XVID AVI
~ 352 x 240
~ around 350MB-ish per episode, total 4.61 GB
~ runtime 50 minutes per ep.
~ complete 13 episodes + 1 video press kit

Downloads:
~ Torrent (help me seed!)
~ direct HTTP downloads via the sibling entity
~~ rename the extension to .avi
~~ the direct links are temporary, they're going to be replaced with Megaupload links as soon as the sibling entity is finished uploading them there

The sibling entity has a lovely pimp post [here], and I can't agree more with what she said: "Covington Cross is actually a ficcable, fandom-able (do these words exist??) series, I think. There's excellent interaction between endearing characters, and massive room for speculation. It's too bad it came before the age of the Internet - otherwise it might have flourished as a series. Sadly, it was canceled with only 13 episodes to its credit."

Update: The Pangandamans have issued their official side of the story on a famous local tabloid Abante Tonite, claiming that they were the ones who were assaulted and injured. Read the whole ridiculous account of how a 56-year-old man with an umbrella turned into superman and posed such a threat to young, strapping boys with bodyguards and guns here (the article is in Tagalog):

Anak ng DAR Chief: ‘KAMI ANG SINUGOD AT SINAKTAN!’ (Son of DAR Chief: 'We were the ones assaulted and injured!')

Noemi of A Filipino Mom Blogger keeps an extensive post about the issue and is impressively up-to-date. Read more from her blog post:

Mayor Nasser Pangandaman Jr. (DAR chief’s son) Mauled A Father & Son at Valley Golf and Country Club

Mindanews condenses both sides of the story here (the article is in English):

Pangandamans accused of mauling; DAR Sec says "my son was attacked first"

Got this from the sibling entity. This is just...no words. And all this happened right after Christmas.

Here are a few excerpts from Bambee de la Paz's blog, daughter of the 56-year-old man, who witnessed the whole thing:

Excerpt 1: At around 1:30 PM today, at Valley Golf and Country Club, Antipolo City, Mayor Nasser Pangandaman, Jr., Mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur, his father, Secretary Nasser Pangandaman of the Department of Agrarian Reform, and company, beat my defenseless 56-year-old dad and my 14-year-old brother to a pulp because of some stupid misunderstanding on the golf course.

Excerpt 2: The mayor of Masiu City, Lanao del Sur talks with my dad. Things get heated up. Voices were raised. But never, in my wildest dreams, did I ever imagine that someone would pull out a punch. Apparently not. He attacks my father. His flightmates, maybe 2 or 3 of them, rush to his aid and beat up my father. My 56-year-old father. My younger brother and I could not just watch. We rushed to break the fight. My younger brother pleads to the mayor to please stop it. To not hurt my dad. To just stop. His words still ring through my head..."Sorry na po, sorry na po...tama na...tama na po..." With his hands in front of his chest in a praying position. PLEADING. The mayor socks him in the face. My brother defended himself. My dad is still on the ground getting clobbered. My brother is the same way. I try to stop the fight, but all I can do is stop one person. There were 4 or 5 of them attacking now.

Excerpt 3: We leave. We walk to the clubhouse to file a complaint. My brother asks for a doctor. My dad could barely walk. Their group comes to the clubhouse, sees my brother. Once again my brother pleads, says sorry, and is crying. He was CRYING, for crissakes. But no. The relentless mayor still punches him in the face, and then sees my dad and goes after my dad again. Him and his friend pull my dad to the ground, pulls at his feet, and steps on him like he's dirt. I run to him and try to hold him back, holding him back by his shirt, while this other guy and this girl tries to stop me. She tells me to just stop it. I scream in her face "they're beating my father up and you want me to stop?!" I pull at his shirt--I don't let go. All I can see was my dad being trampled on. I didn't even see my brother getting beat up.

Excerpt 4: My mom and my older brother come. I tell her Bino's right ear is bleeding. They both look like they could kill. My dad holds my brother off, I hold off my mom. When I finally got my mom under control, my older brother gets away and I hold him off. Two of the mayor's bodyguards pull out guns. I embraced my brother from the back, just holding him back, crying. The receptionists came to us, crying, hugging me, my dad, and my mom, whispering to us to just leave. "Maam, umalis na po kayo, may mga baril sila...Maam...umalis na po kayo please..." ("Ma'am, please just leave, they have guns...Ma'am...please just leave...")

A lot of people in my flist probably already saw/read this, but I tend to be late with these kinds of things, so please bear with me.

If you haven't watched a single anime series in your life, let your first be Monster.

This rare gem in the anime/manga genre very easily soared its way to being one of the top must-watch anime programs in my (admittedly rather small) list. It's been a long time since I've been this bowled over by a story, and I'm really glad I felt random enough a few days back to give this a try (though it bears mentioning that the [sibling entity] had been pimping the manga to me for several months, and I was fortunate enough to have been provided a copy of the whole anime series by the generous [info]mochaholic). The first few eps efficiently lays the foundations for a steady journey into moral ambiguity and mindfuckery that just keeps getting bigger and more complicated. The cast of characters is freaking huge, counting the sidestories, but all of them struck me as well-rounded and very believable. It's definitely not without its flaws, but they're few and hardly impede on the overall pace and storyline.

Can't really say more without spoiling, so, just...please. Watch it. If you haven't yet.

Watch the series on [Megavideo] or [Veoh], or the first five episodes on [Youtube].

The sibling entity's [must-read post for local writers].

I'm not a serious writer. Despite having been published locally before (and I have a gnawing suspicion that the submissions editor was drunk at the time -- I reread what I submitted and it was total crap, so I have no idea what he was thinking), and still having designs on being published again when I've written something I'm happy with, I just dabble. This is why I often try to avoid serious debates and discussions about the local literary scenes. Sadly, being born into a family of writers also entails that these same debates and discussions pop up in everyday conversation, so it's a little hard not to react sometimes.

Which leaves me extremely grateful for posts like the one mentioned above, where the writer just about echoes some of my feelings on certain issues and manages to lay them out in a far more eloquent and structured manner.

Please take the time to read the made-of-win post ♥!

Short break from cleaning up the flist to post this: the infamous Gwendal/Gunter kiss scene in Kyou Kara Maou (misleading, I know). I got tired of having to hunt for this episode whenever I missed this part, so I just took out this excerpt.

That little "Aa!" that Gwendal utters right after Anissina pushes him gets me every time. XD

Also, [HitokiriMisao] hosts some excerpts from the PS2/PC games of Kyou Kara Maou. Pretty fun to browse through. One of them has the chars participating in a pageant dressed as women. Including Gwendal (!). Conrad's surprisingly fabulous, and Gunter looks oddly er...fitting. XD

On an unrelated note, why is it that the most misspelled word I've been encountering lately is "misspell"? The [sibling entity] kept pimping the Antique Bakery manga to me for several months (or has it been a year? o.o; Haven't kept track XD ), and curiosity drove me to try out the first episode of the anime with [info]summerbreeze21. The anime's kind of weird - the 3D background looks great, but the 2D characters look very poorly coloured and animated. Still, it got me laughing at several moments, and I got interested enough to read through the manga scanlations.

Not sure how accurate this info is, as it's from the YYH Wikipedia page.

20th Century Fox has announced, that the rights have been bought to a live action adaption to Yu Yu Hakusho as of early July 2008. Film is planned for a July 2010 release, and actors Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Megan Fox have been attached to play lead roles of Yusuke Urameshi and Botan.

I knew about Dragonball...time's managed to numb that particular bit of horrible news for me. But YYH?

Good lord, let this be some misguided April Fool's.

Also from Wiki:

On July 22, 2008, IF Magazine published an article on its website regarding a live-action Cowboy Bebop movie that is in development by 20th Century Fox. Producer Erwin Stoff said that the film's development was in the early stages, and that they had "just signed it."

[Journey to the Center of the Earth FX Artists Go Unpaid]
~ it's a little scary that something like this could happen to something so high-profile. Artists who worked on the digital effects for the movie Journey to the Center of the Earth (starring Brendan Fraser) still haven't been paid. The studio that hired them (formerly Meteor Studios) kept giving excuses as to why the pay was delayed throughout the project, until artists were eventually working without compensation. ~ a photographer's visual record of his last few moments with his aging father. Fucking breaks my heart.

On an unrelated note, I can't get over the fact that one of the supervillains in the Evil League of Evil shown in Act III of [Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along-Blog] is named Fake Thomas Jefferson XD. So FTW.

Got this from the [sibling entity] earlier today, and still can't get enough of Act II. XD Check out Joss Whedon's:

Dr. Horrible currently has two Acts up for free viewing, with a third on the way (July 19). All Acts will be removed on July 20, however (not that they'll vanish from mininova any time soon XD ).

Some excerpts from the Masterplan:

1) Why, Joss? Why? Why now, why free, why us?

Once upon a time, all the writers in the forest got very mad with the Forest Kings and declared a work-stoppage. The forest creatures were all sad; the mushrooms did not dance, the elderberries gave no juice for the festival wines, and the Teamsters were kinda pissed. (They were very polite about it, though.) During this work-stoppage, many writers tried to form partnerships for outside funding to create new work that circumvented the Forest King system.

Frustrated with the lack of movement on that front, I finally decided to do something very ambitious, very exciting, very mid-life-crisisy. Aided only by everyone I had worked with, was related to or had ever met, I single-handedly created this unique little epic. A supervillain musical, of which, as we all know, there are far too few.

The idea was to make it on the fly, on the cheap – but to make it. To turn out a really thrilling, professionalish piece of entertainment specifically for the internet. To show how much could be done with very little. To show the world there is another way. To give the public (and in particular you guys) something for all your support and patience. And to make a lot of silly jokes. Actually, that sentence probably should have come first.

It starts off kind of weird and slow, but picks up a lot when the singing starts XD Dr. Horrible is Neil Patrick Harris and Captain Hammer is Firefly's Nathan Fillion, and that just tickles me in very odd ways.

[ElfQuest Ventures to the Big Screen] by Ryan Ball
~ An ElfQuest movie! I've been meaning to make a pimp post about this wonderful comic series for a while (the original anyway - Siege at Blue Mountain onwards is a little weird compared to Original Quest). For those who aren't familiar with this 80's classic, check out the [scanned comics archive over at the official site]. Yes, the whole thing's there. XD

[On Entitlement] by Christopher Butcher
~ So against my will this girl flashes her sketchbook at me.

“I only need to learn to draw hands,” she says, handing me the book. “They’re hard. I’m really great otherwise.”

[Publishing House Alert: Yaoi House LLC] from Dear Author
~ some details on why Yaoi House was shutting down. Very um...no words, really. XD

Sometimes, I think I'm still in kindergarten. With all the talking about you behind your back thing, crying victim in an argument, and where people you don't know judge you and call you names after hearing just one side of the coin.

I don't think I was present when they gave the How to be Friends textbook that everyone else seems to be holding up as an international standard. All I can do is wing it like all the other dropouts of Life 101.

But despite all this, it's encouraging to know I have friends who support me and understand when I just can't be there most of the time.

Just a small toast, to those of us who would rather not think ill of anyone but still know when we're being screwed over.
